SOUTH CAROLINA FOR TRUTH IN EDUCATION

ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

The ProTruthSC Coalition is a growing grassroots coalition of organizations and concerned citizens from across the Palmetto State and beyond. The founding members of the coalition are the E3 Foundation, the Lowcountry Black Parents Association, the ACLU of South Carolina, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. ProTruthSC’s purpose grew out of a shared and collective commitment to protect and expand the teaching of diverse and inclusive history in South Carolina.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to identify, confront, and dismantle systemic barriers to equity in education by advancing policies, practices, and partnerships that promote supportive learning environments and outcomes for traditionally marginalized and underserved students, families, and communities.

As concerned parents, educators, business owners, advocates, and activists, we believe:

  • Education is a human right. Every child deserves access to high-quality, equitable, and inclusive education that centers, rather than silences or marginalizes, diverse ways of being with regard to race, ethnicity, language, gender, gender identification, sexual orientation, religion, income, body size, physical ability, and cognitive ability.

Inequities in education are not accidental. They are the result of deeply rooted systemic barriers such as unequal funding; discriminatory discipline, assessment, curricula, and language policies and practices; and limited access to qualified educators and resources.

Systemic barriers can and must be dismantled. Inequities in South Carolina’s educational systems are not inevitable, but the result of structures that can be transformed through collective action.

Truth matters. A diverse and inclusive history is essential for understanding our shared humanity, building empathy, and strengthening democracy. Information literacy, critical thinking and analytical practices are crucial to developing informed contributors to our world.

Representation strengthens learning. Curriculum, teaching, and leadership must reflect the diverse communities we serve to foster belonging and success.

Community voice is power. Families, educators, and students—especially those most impacted by inequities and dedicated to ensuring respect of all individuals—must lead and shape decisions about education policy and practice.

Knowledge is an act of resistance. Educating and informing ourselves, the general public, and decision-makers are critical elements in the process of affecting change.
